Chaca Rice Processing Initiative uses rice husk as agricultural by-product to manufacture eco-briquettes that provide an affordable and efficient fuel alternative to charcoal or firewood. The eco-briquettes have reduced carbon monoxide emissions and consumers can use them for the same stoves and heaters they previously fueled with firewood. Chaca’s business model is designed as a profit sharing scheme, involving local women groups in the production of rice husk eco-briquettes, thus creating local employment and income. Eco-briquettes take off pressure on forests already suffering from human-made deforestation and climate change-induced desertification.
